Mohammed Abacha, son of Nigeria’s former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has failed in his bid to clinch the Peoples Democratic Party governorship ticket for Kano State after losing the party’s primary election to Muhammad Bello Dalhatu.
The primary election, held on Monday, saw Dalhatu emerge victorious with 2,233 votes, while Abacha secured 749 votes.
Announcing the outcome, Chairman of the PDP Kano State Governorship Primary Election Committee, Umar Hadejia, described the exercise as orderly, transparent and compliant with the party’s rules and electoral guidelines.
“Having scored the highest number of valid votes cast, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Dalhatu is hereby declared the winner of the PDP governorship primary election and consequently returned as the party’s candidate for Kano State,” Hadejia said.
He commended delegates, aspirants, party officials, security personnel and other stakeholders for ensuring a smooth process and encouraged party members to close ranks ahead of the state governorship election.
This is not Abacha’s first attempt at securing the PDP ticket. In 2023, he lost to Sadiq Aminu Wali after a prolonged legal dispute involving rival factions within the party. He also contested the 2019 Kano governorship election under the platform of the Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance.
