Amobi Ogah, a representative for the Isuikwuato-Umunneochi Federal Constituency in Abia State, has urged his House of Representatives colleagues to support Tajudeen Abass, the consensus choice of the All Progressives Congress, as Speaker before the 10th Assembly’s commencement.
On Tuesday, the Labour Party member-elect advised Nigerian politicians to learn to look beyond money politics in order to find a capable leader. He did this while addressing journalists in Abuja and rallying support for Abbas.
His support comes just after Abbas assured Nigerians that, if he were elected Speaker of the House of Representatives, he would not run a rubber-stamp legislature.
Abbas was declared on Monday to be the ‘anointed’ nominee of both the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and the ruling APC for the position of Speaker in the 10th Assembly. Abbas represents Zaria Federal Constituency in Kaduna State’s North-West zone.
Although some members-elect were not pleased with the choice of the Kaduna politician, Ogah praised the ruling party for making the right choice, asserting that Abbas’s election will foster inclusivity and togetherness in other parts of the nation.
He said, “Hon Abass has shown more competence and character which have given him an edge to be a preferred aspirant to others. As a politician he is not doing money politics like others which is part of what my leader, Mr Peter Obi, of the Labour Party preaches. He is just a replica of Obi and that is more reason am supporting him and calling on others of my colleagues to do the same.
“I am assuring you that with Hon Abass as the Speaker and Hon Ben Kalu as the Deputy Speaker, the 10th Assembly will achieve more and will take the country to a greater height.”
