The Abia State Government has directed the massive desilting of blocked drains across the state, following an early flood warning issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday in Umuahia after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti. He said the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency was working “around the clock” in Aba and Umuahia to clear drainages and mitigate flooding.
Kanu urged residents to stop dumping refuse in gutters and announced that Abia would mark World Cleanup Day on 25 September. He added that sanitary inspectors had visited 4,500 premises across 85 communities since August, stressing that they must not extort citizens but enforce only approved fines.
The state also approved a tree-planting campaign under its “go green” policy to curb erosion, improve public health and enhance investment appeal.
