An Abuja-bound train from Kaduna derailed halfway to the nation’s capital on Sunday. The train, with dozens of passengers on board, departed Rigasa Train Station in Kaduna around 8:05 AM but derailed in a rocky region in Jere about an hour later.

Security operatives and soldiers were quickly deployed to the scene of the incident, while railway engineers were seen attempting to fix the damaged parts of the rail track.

Confirming the incident, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) said normal passenger train services between its Rigasa Station in Kaduna and Idu in Abuja continued without disruption following a minor derailment on the route at Jere station on Sunday morning.

In a statement signed by the NRC Deputy Director of Public Relations, Yakub Mahmood, the Corporation assured the public that all commuters arrived safely at their destinations.

“NRC engineers are currently addressing the issue on-site. The NRC apologises for any inconvenience and reiterates its commitment to passenger safety and comfort,” the statement read.
