Aisha Buhari: NANS to commence nationwide protest on Monday
The National Association of Nigerian Students’ leadership has called for a national protest to demand the release of Aminu Mohammed, a student at the Federal University of Dutse in Jigawa State, who was detained and imprisoned for a tweet about Aisha Buhari, the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Usman Barambu, the president of NANS, stated in a statement on Thursday that the demonstration, which will start on Monday, will last indefinitely until Mohammed is freed.
According to reports, NANS had earlier apologized to the First Lady and demanded the student’s release. NANS claimed that after trying several methods for consultation and consolidation without success, it was left with no choice but to confront.
“Sequel to the exhaustion of all options available to us before confrontation in seeking the freedom of one of us who was arrested in questionable manner, tortured, molested, harassed and detained by agents of government, you are hereby notified of the decision of the leadership of NANS to proceed on a nationwide protest.
“We have consulted and consolidated which yielded no desirable results in seeking the freedom of Mohammed, hence, the protest shall commence as follows: Monday, December 5, 2022 nationwide.
“Please note that our demonstration shall continue until he is released unconditionally,” the statement said.
According to reports, Mohammed was reportedly apprehended by security personnel in November after they tracked him to Jigawa and took him to Abuja.
Mohammed was subsequently remanded in the Suleja Correctional Centre in Niger State by Justice Halilu Yusuf of the Federal Capital Territory High Court for allegedly defaming the first Lady’s character.
Social media users have responded to Adamu’s detention by appealing for his freedom, including well-known Nigerians.
Barambu added that Usman Baba, the Inspector General of Police, and the First Lady would be the targets of NANS’ demonstration.
