Akwa Ibom enacts law against indiscriminate waste disposal

The Akwa Ibom State Governor has announced plans to introduce an executive order to legally support the prosecution of individuals caught engaging in indiscriminate waste disposal.

Governor Umo Eno made this announcement during the launch of newly acquired equipment for the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) in Itu LGA.

Akwa Ibom is widely recognized for its cleanliness, evident in the well-maintained environment across the state capital and other regions.

To preserve this reputation, Governor Eno has unveiled new waste management equipment designed to enhance the timely and efficient disposal of waste throughout the state.

During the unveiling, he expressed disapproval of the indiscriminate waste disposal observed in certain areas, emphasizing that Akwa Ibom residents are known for their commitment to cleanliness, a standard that must be upheld.

He called for a concerted effort to ensure a clean state and charged local government councils to align with the Waste Management Agency in the discharge of their duties, saying that awards will be given to the cleanest LGA by May 29, 2025.

The governor Eno also ceases the opportunity to make pronouncements on some important issues in the state.

He assured the people of uninterrupted job execution at various project sites and urged the youths to embrace the trend by availing themselves of various jobs that will be executed during and after the festivities season.

The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency, Prince Ikim, praised Governor Umo Eno’s commitment to maintaining a clean state through the acquisition of new waste management equipment. He also pledged his full support to ensure the governor’s vision is successfully realized.

Mr. Ene Baba-Owo, National Coordinator of Clean Up Nigeria Limited, also lauded the governor’s dedication to environmental cleanliness. He encouraged the agency to remain steadfast in implementing this vision effectively.

The newly acquired equipment includes five waste-compacting trucks, four swing-arm trucks, one pull-up waste truck with a crane mechanism, 50 dumpsters with a 6,000-litre capacity, and six dumpsters with a 12,000-litre capacity.
