The Akwa Ibom State Government has apprehended vendors accused of engaging in fraudulent activities during the recent kiosks validation exercise.
This development stems from Governor Umo Eno’s dissatisfaction with reports of illegal kiosk resales and other irregularities associated with the program. The Governor had urged the responsible ministry to identify and apprehend those involved in such illicit activities.
On Wednesday, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism Charles Udoh revealed that several vendors had been arrested for various offenses, including multiple online registrations, reselling kiosks at inflated prices, data discrepancies during verification, and name mismatches.
In his words, “The kiosks confiscated from these culprits will be reassigned to deserving vendors who were unfairly deprived of this government initiative”.
Addressing vendors at Unity Park, Uyo, Commissioner Udoh issued a stern warning against exploiting the system. He urged those who had purchased kiosks at prices exceeding the approved rates of ₦100,000 or ₦30,000 for open spaces to report to ministry officials for assistance and potential intervention by security agencies.
Udoh concluded by expressing gratitude to Governor Eno for his generosity in providing opportunities for the people of Akwa Ibom State. He reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to promoting transparency and fairness in all its endeavours.
