Embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has stated that harbouring aspirations to become the governor of Lagos in 2027 is not a crime.
Speaking during a press briefing at his residence in the GRA area of Ikeja, Lagos, on Saturday, Obasa refuted claims that he had declared any intention to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Obasa said, “Having (an) ambition to become a governor is not a sin. Is it However, I said it on the floor of the house when the budget was presented that I had no thoughts of governorship but that does not mean I am not qualified or that I lack experience and I still maintain that.”
He also addressed his removal as Speaker, criticising the alleged militarisation of the Assembly complex during the impeachment process. According to Obasa, his impeachment occurred in his absence while he was out of the country.
Obasa was ousted as Speaker on Monday, January 13, 2025, after more than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house voted him out, citing alleged misconduct.
In his stead, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, his deputy, was unanimously elected the new Speaker, marking a historic moment as the first female to hold the position in Lagos State’s history.
Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, was first elected to the House in 2007 and served as Speaker from June 2015 until his recent removal.
