Anambra urges families to fight HIV with open home conversations

The Anambra State Government has called on families to play a stronger role in HIV prevention by promoting open discussions within households.

The appeal was made by the Executive Director and Project Manager of the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency, Dr Nkem Okeke, during a Monday interview on Arise News, where he stressed the importance of shared responsibility in tackling the epidemic.

He explained that HIV prevention, testing, treatment and stigma reduction should not rest solely on government and health workers, but must involve families and communities through continuous dialogue.

Okeke said creating a culture of openness at home would encourage early testing, improve access to treatment, reduce discrimination, and promote healthier lifestyle choices among young people and adults.

He also called for broader collaboration involving parents, guardians, religious leaders, schools, the media and other stakeholders in strengthening awareness and prevention efforts.

The ANSACA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to expanding public sensitisation campaigns and partnerships aimed at reducing new infections while supporting people living with HIV.

He further urged residents to know their HIV status through regular testing as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate the disease in Anambra and across Nigeria.
