Anthony Joshua has been released from the hospital after receiving treatment for injuries sustained in a road accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, disclosed that the former heavyweight boxing champion has been “deemed clinical fit to recuperate from home”.

The accident occurred on Monday when a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and members of his team collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Tragically, two of Joshua’s close associates — his personal trainer, Kevin Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami — lost their lives in the incident.

Joshua survived the crash with minor injuries and was immediately taken to a Lagos-based medical facility for treatment.

Omotoso confirmed that the boxer was treated at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, before being discharged on Wednesday afternoon.

He added that Joshua and his mother later visited a Lagos funeral home, where the remains of the deceased associates are being kept, to pay their last respects.

“Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu deeply appreciate the public concern and show of love and affection over this very sad and unfortunate incident,” Omotoso stated.

On Tuesday, the Ogun State Police Command attributed the accident to a burst tyre.

However, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said preliminary investigations indicated that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking were responsible for the crash.

Although born in England, Joshua frequently visits his hometown of Sagamu in Ogun State. He was also in Nigeria last year, where he socialised with celebrities and presented President Bola Tinubu with a signed boxing glove.

His most recent visit followed just days after he knocked out Jake Paul in an exhibition heavyweight bout at the Kaseya Centre in Miami.
