On Thursday in Abuja, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello, said anyone who requests bail for arrested criminals only to release them back into society should be apprehended.
As he lamented the overflowing capacity of the three largest correctional facilities serving the FCT, he stated this.
Bello made the announcement while fielding questions from journalists at the 40th State House Ministerial Briefing, which was organised by the Presidential Communications Team.
The call followed reports that hoodlums arrested for various crimes were being released thanks to the intervention of high-ranking Nigerians who use them as foot soldiers for heinous crimes.
He urged Abuja residents to report those involved in releasing these hoodlums to the authorities.
Mohammed, on the other hand, lamented that the FCT criminal justice system faces numerous challenges, particularly because its three correctional facilities are now full and cannot accommodate any additional detainees.
To address this, he stated that criminals convicted in Abuja courts are now being transferred to Suleja, Niger State, while the FCTA is developing a “bolster centre” to house juvenile convicts.
