A councillorship candidate in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, Ogun State, Adeleke Adeyinka, was shot and killed by gunmen near the Oke Ilewo area of the state capital. Adeyinka, a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Ward 15 in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for November 16, 2024, was attacked in broad daylight.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants arrived in a car with tinted windows, shot Adeyinka, and then struck him with a stone before fleeing the scene.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that efforts are underway to track down the suspects. According to the Command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, “Around 12:30 pm, a concerned citizen reported that unknown individuals, believed to be cultists, arrived in an unregistered Toyota Corolla Sports car with a pump-action shotgun and pistol. They opened fire on 40-year-old Adeyinka Adeleke at Jide Jones, Oke Ilewo in Ibara, killing him before escaping to an unknown location. Police have taken photos of the scene and restored normalcy, while efforts continue to apprehend the suspects.”

In response to the tragic event, the Ogun State APC Youth Leaders’ Forum condemned the killing, describing it as “senseless and horrific.” In a statement signed by youth leader Kabir Odedairo and group spokesman Timothy Odedina, they called for an immediate investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“The Ogun State All Progressives Congress Youth Leaders’ Forum is deeply saddened and outraged by the brutal murder of Adeleke Adeyinka,” the group stated. “We strongly condemn this horrific act, which has left our community in shock. The fact that Adeleke was shot and stoned to death by unknown assailants is deeply disturbing and requires immediate attention from law enforcement.”

Describing Adeyinka as a “promising young leader,” the forum urged for a thorough investigation and called on authorities to enhance security in the area to prevent further violence. They also expressed their condolences to Adeyinka’s family, friends, and colleagues, emphasizing that his contributions to the Ogun State youth community would not be forgotten.
