The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a landslide victory in the Rivers State local government elections, winning 20 councils, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed just two.
The APC also claimed victory in the councillorship polls across 20 LGAs, with the PDP taking only three. This marks the first time since the return of democracy in 1999 that the APC has dominated Rivers State politics, traditionally a PDP stronghold.
Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Dr Michael Odey, announced the results on Sunday at the Commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt. He said certificates of return would be presented to winners on Monday, 1 September.
Despite the scale of the victory, Saturday’s election witnessed a low voter turnout, with many residents staying away from polling centres.
