The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that the crime rate in Abuja has “significantly declined” despite recent high-profile incidents in the city.
Wike made the remark during a press briefing in Abuja while addressing concerns over the armed robbery that claimed the life of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a news anchor and producer with Arise Television.
Somtochukwu, popularly known as Sommie, was killed in late September at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, and was laid to rest on October 18 in Agulu, Anaocha LGA of Anambra State.
Responding to claims of an alleged spike in crime linked to such incidents, Wike challenged journalists to present verifiable data.
“So when you talk about the spikes, what are the statistics? Just because a colleague of yours was involved, then you say there’s a spike. You have no statistics,” he said.
He further emphasized that protecting lives and property remains the core duty of security agencies, regardless of who the victims are.
“It is our responsibility to protect lives and property, not about who is involved, whether it’s an Arise TV person or Channels,” the minister added.
Acknowledging the ongoing security challenges in the capital, Wike commended the efforts of law enforcement agencies, noting that their work has led to a significant drop in crime.
