The Nigerian Army has revealed that its official X account was targeted in an attempted cyberattack on Saturday, leading to the activation of security measures to block unauthorised access.

The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday.

Anele said the suspected cyber breach occurred at around 5pm, noting that the Army was handling the incident as a cybersecurity threat.

She said technical and protective measures were immediately deployed to secure the account and prevent further attempts to compromise it.

“The Nigerian Army assures members of the public, the media and other stakeholders that appropriate measures are underway to fully secure the affected account,” she said.

Anele consequently advised members of the public and the media to disregard any suspicious, misleading, unauthorised or unverified material posted through the affected account.

She stressed that such content should not be interpreted as the official position of the Nigerian Army.

The Army spokesperson urged the public and media organisations to rely on the military’s other verified communication channels for official information while efforts to resolve the incident continue.

She reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to maintaining information integrity, operational security and responsible strategic communication.

Anele also thanked members of the public for their vigilance, understanding and cooperation, assuring them that additional information would be released when necessary.
