ASUU Jos warns of impending strike over unmet demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Jos branch, has urged the Federal Government to urgently address its pressing issues to prevent another strike action by academic staff in tertiary institutions.

Members of the union issued this warning during a town hall meeting at the union’s secretariat in Jos, aimed at addressing ongoing issues between ASUU and the federal government.

The meeting, held in collaboration with sister unions in the university, the student union government, parents, trader unions, and other stakeholders, sought to raise public awareness about the government’s lackluster response to the union’s demands.

The union’s demands include revisiting anti-masses policies, removing the union from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), returning to renegotiations, and signing the Nimi Briggs report.

Other demands are the payment of 35 months’ salaries and accumulated earned allowances included in the 2023 budget, the release of revitalization funds from the 2023 budget, reinstatement of the governing council that was illegally dissolved, payment of arrears of promotion and responsibility allowances, and payment of backlog of salaries to members omitted by IPPIS.
