On Monday, students protesting the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ ongoing strike reportedly blocked the Sagamu-Benin-Ore route.
Students from Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ago Iwoye, Tai Solarin University of Education in Abeokuta, and the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta are participating in an united protest.
“Stop Toying with Our Education,” they chanted as they marched down the street in protest.
“We have all come here today to close down the Benin-Ore Expressway so that we can convey our demands to the Federal Government and also to send a message to the state governments,” said Sharon Great, President of the TASUED Students’ Union.
“Nigerian universities need proper funding. It is the responsibility of the FG and state government to bring about a viable educational system. That is why we have gathered here today to show that our demands must be met by the Federal Government.
According to Sharon, “I am in solidarity with ASUU, their demands are genuine. If the FG can’t hold down the salaries of political office holders, why would they hold down the salaries of lecturers who work to mold Nigerian future leaders?”
“ASUU strike must end!” He said.
According to reports, ASUU and the Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, as well as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, have stated that the Federal Government has not reached a strong agreement with them that will result in the industrial actions being called off.
ASUU has been on strike for 91 days, beginning on February 14, 2022.
ASUU, NASU, and SSANU staged strikes to seek higher welfare benefits, better working conditions, and the enforcement of several labor agreements made with the federal government between 2009 and 2020.
