The Taraba State University (TSU) Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its strike after just one month.

The strike, which began on December 5, 2024, was initiated over the partial implementation of multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and Memoranda of Action (MoAs) agreed upon by the Taraba State Government and the union since 2014.

Key issues raised by the union, now addressed, included university funding, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), staff pension and gratuity, backlog of salaries, the constitution of the governing council, and minimum wage adjustments.

ASUU noted that the government has pledged to enhance university funding through the Governing Council, in accordance with Taraba State Law No. 4 of 2008.

Regarding Earned Academic Allowances, an initial payment of 10% of the accumulated sum has been disbursed, with subsequent monthly payments of 5% set to commence in February 2025 until the arrears are fully settled.

Additionally, the government has approved the implementation of a State-Defined Pension Scheme to ensure the prompt and efficient payment of staff benefits.

“Backlog of Salaries: A template for clearing arrears will be finalised by the first week of February 2025.Constitution of the University Governing Council: Membership will be adjusted to comply with statutory requirements.

“The Government has implemented the wage and consequential adjustments, with a commitment to timely salary payments,” the statement read in part.

“With the above agreements in place and with the approval of ASUU National, the ASUU-TSU Chapter hereby suspends the strike action with immediate effect.

ASUU extended profound gratitude to its national, and Zonal leadership, and the TSU Congress for their unwavering support, which he said had culminated in the successful resolution of the struggle.
