Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the invasion of the Lagos State House of Assembly by security operatives, describing the incident as “utterly reprehensible.”

Call for Investigation

In a statement on his X handle, Atiku demanded a full and thorough investigation, expressing concern that the operatives reportedly had a mandate to enforce a leadership change.

“It is appalling that those who claimed to have fought for democracy would sanction this crass desecration of the state’s foremost legislative body, thereby putting our hard-earned democracy in jeopardy,” he stated.

Attack on Democracy

The 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate criticised the use of security forces in parliamentary conflicts, calling it disgraceful and a violation of democratic principles.

Atiku also accused President Bola Tinubu of interfering in state matters, urging him to focus on resolving Nigeria’s broader economic and governance challenges.

Heavy Security Presence

Reports indicate that security operatives surrounded the Lagos Assembly complex, delaying plenary proceedings. The leadership crisis within the Assembly remains unresolved.
