The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday kicked off its presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general elections, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi among key participants in the nationwide process.
The exercise is taking place across 8,809 wards in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, following the party’s adoption of a direct primary system after its aspirants reportedly failed to agree on a consensus candidate.
Atiku said he voted at the Ajiya Ward Polling Unit in Jimeta, Yola, Adamawa State, describing the process as a strong expression of democracy. In his post, he explained that the nationwide voting reflects the party’s goal of national recovery and progress.
Amaechi also took part in the process in Ubima, Rivers State, where he cast his vote and encouraged Nigerians to prioritise competence over ethnic or religious considerations in leadership choices.
Another aspirant, Hayatu-Deen, voted in Borno State and urged supporters to back his ambition while calling for a new direction within the party.
Party leaders say the primary is a crucial step in selecting the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, with assurances that the process will remain peaceful across all voting centres nationwide.
