Attacks on me over photos with Tinubu show lack of unity in Nigeria — Okonjo-Iweala

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, has urged Nigerians to relax and remain united, saying that the assaults on her over her photo with President Tinubu were needless.

She stated that the issue over why her photo with President Tinubu was revealed late on her Twitter account demonstrates how divided Nigerians are.

Okonjo-Iweala was responding to social media remarks regarding her photos with other foreign leaders at the just finished Paris Economic Summit, as well as her photo with President Tinubu.

Some Nigerians chastised the WTO chief for failing to include a photo of President Bola Tinubu in her tweets from her meeting with the presidents of other countries on Friday.

She later posted her picture with Tinubu on Saturday morning.

Reacting, the WTO boss said the controversy has exposed how polarised Nigeria has become.

She tweeted: “Nigerians, please relax! Re Paris, Interesting attacks from both sides. This sadly shows the depth of polarisation in our society.

“I post photos in the order received by accompanying staff or colleagues. Reading more into it is unwarranted. Let’s unite to build our country, not attack.”

The Paris summit, convened by President Emmanuel Macron, afforded President Tinubu the opportunity of projecting, on a global stage, his advocacy for widening the fiscal space, economic justice for Africa as the world accelerates the pace of energy transition and the urgency of addressing the pressing issues of poverty and climate change.
