The Senate on Wednesday called on the military to collaborate with local communities in establishing early warning systems to detect and prevent future incursions.
This appeal was part of a resolution adopted following an alarm raised by former Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), regarding the infiltration of a violent terrorist group known as Lakurawa.
The group reportedly attacked parts of Sokoto and, more recently, Kebbi State on November 8, killing 20 soldiers in Mera village.
During the debate, lawmakers urged the Federal Government to take swift and decisive action to prevent further attacks and halt the group’s establishment in the region.
Senators cautioned that failure to act could enable the Lakurawa group to expand their operations, spreading terror to other parts of Northern Nigeria and potentially endangering national security.
The Senate further called on the Federal Government to deploy an assessment team to the affected areas to evaluate the damage and address the immediate needs of affected families.
It also emphasized the need for the military to sustain its presence and vigilance in the affected communities to prevent the Lakurawa group from regrouping or extending their operations.
