Governor Abdullahi Sule has signed the Nasarawa State Local Government Law 2024, recently approved by the State House of Assembly.
During the signing ceremony at Government House, Lafia, the governor expressed gratitude to the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, and the Assembly members for their role in passing the bill.
He also commended other stakeholders for their contributions in bringing the new Local Government Law into effect.
Governor Sule highlighted that the signing of this law marks a significant step toward enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of local government operations.
As part of the new law, the governor announced the abolishment of the local government joint account system, in line with the Supreme Court’s ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments, aimed at promoting accountability and transparency.
Additionally, the law establishes Area Administrative Councils, which are to be appointed by the Governor, subject to screening by the State Assembly, and funded by the State government.
He further said that all is set for the establishment of the Nasarawa State Economic Council.
On his part, the Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau said the bill was passed into law on Oct.31, 2024.
Speaker Danladi Jatau stated that the bill followed all necessary legislative procedures within the state assembly, aligning with the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy.
Earlier, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Labaran Magaji, noted that the law underwent thorough processes to ensure inclusivity and suitability. He emphasized that Governor Abdullahi Sule’s assent reflects careful consideration of the Supreme Court’s judgement on local government autonomy.
