Aviation unions move strike to international terminal, cause heavy traffic

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, and other departments of the Ministry of Aviation have been locked down as a result of the ongoing industrial action by aviation unions in Nigeria.

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport is under siege by unionists, which is causing heavy traffic in the area leading to the airport.

Seven days after the end of the two-day warning strike, the unions have vowed to completely shut down Nigerian airspace.

At key locations around the airport, there has been noticeable presence of the police and troops together with unions chanting songs of solidarity.

Comrade Abdulrarak Saidu, a unionist, expressed disappointment that, even after eight years, nothing has been done to ensure that the terms of service are upheld.

Additionally, he lambasted the minister for trying to demolish agency and parastatal offices in Lagos State, saying the minister wanted to transform his erroneous policies into law and dominate the sector.

He said, “For eight years conditions of service were not implemented. Sirika usurps the functions of the Governing boards; there is no check and balance. They wanted to coerce us to come to Abuja, but we didn’t go to the meeting. No conclusions; no genuine meeting with the government.

“He wants to destroy buildings in the sector for a Road map that was not approved for Lagos, even the one approved in Abuja for the aerotropolis nothing has happened there and he wants to turn his policy to law.

“When you are going in the next month, and you want to pull down headquarters and leave nothing. After seven days we go to a total shutdown, we will try to cut Nigeria away from other countries.”
