A medical doctor on duty was shot on Tuesday night when armed bandits attacked Kankara General Hospital in Katsina State, North-West Nigeria.

Dr. Murtala Saleh sustained a gunshot wound to his right thigh, while another individual, Kamala Suleiman, suffered a knee injury.

The police confirmed that both victims are receiving medical treatment and are in stable condition.

According to police spokesman Abubakar Aliyu, officers in the area engaged the attackers in a gunfight. However, the assailants, armed with AK-47 rifles, managed to abduct three individuals during the assault.

“Efforts are being made to ensure the unhurt rescue of the kidnapped victims as well as the arrest of the perpetrators of the dastardly act,” he said in a statement Wednesday.

The state Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Musa, has strongly condemned the “senseless attack on healthcare workers and facilities” and directed the deployment of additional operational resources to the site to enhance security and intensify the search for the perpetrators.
