Benue doctors suspends indefinite strike action
The National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) and Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), Benue State branch, have suspended their over one month indefinite strike action on Wednesday.
This is coming on the heels of the Wednesday’s resignation of Benue State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Sunday Ongbabo, from Benue State Executive Council (EXCO).
Ongbabo shocked members of the council when he tendered his letter of resignation from office during the Wednesday meeting at the Government House, Makurdi.
The Commissioner for information, Culture and Tourism, Mrs. Ngunan Addingi, while briefing journalist after Wednesday executive council meeting said the health commissioner resigned his position citing personal reasons and that Governor Samuel Ortom has accepted his resignation.
Just as the Commissioner of Health tendered his resignation, leadership of the two health unions, JOHESU/ NAGGMDP held a press conference at the General Hospital Northbank, Makurdi and called off their over one month indefinite strike action.
A press statement signed by the chairman of NAGGMDP and that of Medical Health Workers of Nigeria (MHWUN) Dr. Diatah James and Comrade D.Y. Nyam respectively, which was made available to The Nation, directed members to resume work in all government health facilities unfailingly on Thursday.
Among the demands of the health workers in Benue State is improved condition of service and prompt payment of salaries of nurses in government hospitals in the state.
