Three alleged robbers were killed by the Benue State Police Command in a gunfight at Afia in the state’s Ukum Local Government Area.

The State Command spokesperson, Catherine Anene, said in a statement released late Sunday that the officers from Ukum who reacted to a distress call engaged the alleged thieves in a gun fight.

Anene said, “On the 14/10/2022 at about 0230hrs, a distress call was received from Afia, Ukum Local Government Area, that armed robbers were robbing within the area.

“A patrol team was deployed to the area swiftly. On reaching the scene, the robbers engaged the police in a gun duel.

“Three suspects sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were confirmed dead while other suspects escaped with wounds.

The PPRO identified a locally made pistol with five rounds of live ammo, a machete, and a few trinkets that were possibly charms among the goods confiscated from the suspects.

The PPRO reported that while operations to capture further gang members were ongoing, the state’s commissioner of police, Wale Abass, praised community people for their assistance and promised them a prompt response to distress calls.
