Benue residents lament hike in cement price

Benue cement consumers have expressed dissatisfaction with the abrupt hike in the product’s price, soaring from N5,500 to N8,000.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Makurdi, their sentiments were shared.

Mr. James Toryila highlighted that the significant surge in cement prices is unjustified, emphasizing that sellers are exploiting the fragile economy to maximize profits.

“You cannot tell me that between last week and this week, the cost of producing cement increased to warrant this high price.

“What is happening to our economy is worrisome. The Nigerian economy has not been this bad,” Toryila said.

Mr. Simon Adzende criticized the sudden surge in the product’s price, labeling it as alarming. He emphasized that it would deter low-income individuals from initiating any construction projects.

Adzende urged the government to promptly intervene to prevent the country’s economy from collapsing entirely.

On the other hand, Mr. Oche Onah, who purchased the product on Monday for N7,500, expressed astonishment at the jump to N8,000 by Wednesday.

Contrarily, Mr. Ternenge Shima, a cement vendor, stated that the increase occurred gradually and was not as abrupt as many buyers were suggesting.
