The House of Representatives has passed for second reading a bill proposing the establishment of the Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma Federal University of Agriculture and Solid Minerals in Jalingo, Taraba State.

The bill was considered during Wednesday’s plenary session presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, following its presentation by Sadiq Tafida, who represents Jalingo, Yorro, and Zing Federal Constituency.

While leading the debate, Tafida explained that the proposed institution is aimed at addressing key gaps in manpower development, research, and innovation within agriculture and solid minerals.

“This proposed institution is not merely an addition to the number of universities in Nigeria; it is a strategic intervention aimed at addressing critical gaps in our nation’s agricultural productivity, solid minerals development, and human capital advancement,” he said.

He stressed that despite Nigeria’s rich natural resources, challenges such as food insecurity and underutilisation of mineral deposits persist, particularly in Taraba State, which he described as highly endowed but lacking a specialised federal institution.

The lawmaker said the university would focus on research, innovation, and training in agriculture and mining-related fields, while also promoting entrepreneurship and youth empowerment.

Tafida called on lawmakers to support the bill, noting that agriculture remains a major contributor to the economy but is hampered by outdated practices and weak research systems. He also highlighted the untapped potential of the mining sector in driving economic diversification.

He added that the institution would help create jobs, boost economic activity in Jalingo and surrounding areas, and attract students from across the country, thereby promoting national integration.

He further described naming the university after General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma as a tribute to his contributions to national development and philanthropy.

According to him, the proposal aligns with federal goals on economic diversification, food security, and expanding access to specialised higher education.

Tafida maintained that the university’s combined focus on agriculture and solid minerals would provide innovative solutions for national development, job creation, and sustainable growth.
