It was a dark Sunday in Lagos, as 14 early morning commuters, including churchgoers, were killed in an auto accident near Buhari Estate, Agemowo, along the Badagry expressway.
In addition, nine people were critically injured in the crash.
The accident was confirmed by the Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corp, Babatunde Farinloye, who blamed it on overspeeding by the drivers of the two affected vehicles.
He said despite the early morning rainfall , the drivers were over speeding.
The early Sunday accident created serious traffic on the busy road as the vehicles,which were involved in the accident blocked a large part of the road .
It was gathered that the accident involved a fully- loaded commercial bus with the registration number MUS 411XU, and a tipper truck with registration number :AKM 926YQ.
Witnesses around the scene of the accident,said that the two vehicles were driving in opposite direction ,when they had a head on collision .
A resident of Mowo ,Mark Chiedozie, said he arrived the scene immediately after the accident occured,” I don’t know which vehicle was going which way,but what I heard was that they collided ,while on top speed .”
” I got there around 7:40, but those who were around the scene of the he accident said that it happened about 15 minutes earlier”.
Chiedozie said that among those who died were those going for church services.
Meanwhile ,nine people ,who survived with varying degrees of injuries were rescued and taken to the hospital while the dead bodies were deposited at the Badagry General Hospital morgue .
The Lagos FRSC commander stated that the obstruction on the road was cleared for smooth movement of vehicles .
He also warned drivers in the state to desist from over speeding .
