The national grid suffered another system collapse on Wednesday, plunging many parts of Nigeria into darkness.
Reports indicate that power generation dropped abruptly just after 11 a.m. on Wednesday. At the time, hourly power generation stood at 4,064 megawatts but plummeted to 1,203MW by noon and eventually to 0.00MW by 1 p.m.
The spokesperson for the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Ndidi Mbah, has not yet responded to inquiries, stating that she was attending an event. However, sources within some power generation companies confirmed a general grid disturbance earlier in the day.
According to reports, the incident involved a trip-off, causing most power plants on the grid to lose generation capacity.
This marks the first grid collapse in 2025, following a line-tripping incident in January. In 2024, the grid collapsed 12 times and has recorded over 100 collapses in the past decade.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company also acknowledged the development on its X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday.
“Dear Valued Customer, We regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am today causing a power outage across our franchise areas.
“While gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to serve you better,” the post reads.
