The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Idrisu Musa, over the alleged killing of his elder brother, Muhammed Haruna, and Haruna’s wife, Habiba Muhammed, in Asarara Village.
Police said the incident happened in the early hours of Saturday when the couple were reportedly attacked with a cutlass while sleeping in their home around 5:15 a.m.
The victims suffered serious injuries during the attack and were later confirmed dead.
Police spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday evening, said investigators recovered “substantial and incriminating evidence” connecting the suspect to the killings.
He also revealed that the suspect had allegedly threatened the deceased couple with a cutlass on several occasions before the incident.
“The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested Idrisu Musa, 25, in connection with the murder of his elder brother Muhammed Haruna, and his wife Habiba Muhammed,” the statement said.
It further stated that, “Substantial and implicating evidence has been recovered linking the suspect to the crime. The suspect had reportedly intimidated the couple with a cutlass on several prior occasions.”
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Umar M. Hadejia, has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for detailed investigation.
“The Command assures the public that justice will be pursued diligently,” the statement added.
The incident had earlier caused panic among residents of Jega Local Government Area following reports that unknown attackers had invaded the couple’s residence and killed them.
Residents of the community have since called on security agencies to ensure those responsible are brought to justice, while police say more updates will be provided as investigations progress.
