Boat capsizes in Taraba, many feared dead

Several people are reported missing when a boat carrying about 100 passengers across the River Benue in Taraba state’s Karim Lamido local government area crashed midway.

On Saturday evening, the majority of commuters were returning from Mayoreneyo fish market in Ardo Kola Local Government Area.The tragedy occurred as the boat was en route to Binnari town in the Karim Lamido local government area, according to sources.

It was also learned that none of the passengers were wearing a life jacket.

Member representing Karim Lamido 2 state constituency, Anas Shuaibu, in a statement Sunday on his Facebook page, expressed sadness over the incident.

He also condoled with families of those who might have lost love ones after the unfortunate incident.

The acting chairman of inland water transporters in Taraba state, Jidda Mayoreneyo, who reportedly spoke to newsmen said 15 bodies were recovered close to the scene of the incident.

When Contacted, spokesman of the Police Command in Taraba state, SP Abdullahi Usman said the Command is yet to get any report about the incident.
