The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has announced plans to recruit and deploy about 800 water marshals nationwide by December to enhance safety and regulation on Nigeria’s waterways.
Managing Director Bola Oyebamiji disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja, noting that the initiative aims to curb frequent boat mishaps, enforce life jacket compliance, and monitor unauthorised loading points.
According to him, marshals will also sensitise passengers and operators on safe navigation practices.
“We currently have between 350 and 450 water marshals, but the target is to raise the figure to 800 to ensure that all authorised jetties have more than one marshal on duty,” Oyebamiji said.
He explained that NIWA has provided the necessary equipment and navigational aids, alongside monitoring teams and task forces in riverine areas, to support the marshals.
Oyebamiji urged passengers to comply with safety rules, particularly the compulsory use of life jackets, stressing that superstitious beliefs must not override scientific safety measures.
He also called on the National Assembly to fast-track the passage of the Coastal Guard Bill and urged riverine state governments to collaborate with NIWA to further strengthen waterway safety.
