The government of Borno State has returned people from more than 20 communities who had been displaced by Boko Haram insurgents to their ancestral homes in the state.
The state Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, was represented by the Deputy Governor, Hon. Umar Usman Kadafur, at the handover of non-food items donated by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development on Wednesday in Maiduguri.
Zulum thanked the Federal Government for the intervention, saying “the relative peace we have been experiencing prompted us to close down some of the IDPs camp in Maiduguri Metropolitan and Jere Local Government Area.”
He added “Over 20 communities have been resettled to their ancestral homes. The government of Borno State is making sure that we build resilience in all the communities that have been resettled.”
He assured the ministry that the state government had set up a follow-up mechanism to ensure the distribution serve its purpose
“This relief items comes at the right when we are really in need of them,” the governor stated.
Zulum also thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for various interventions to the people of Borno State.
Earlier in her remarks, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouk, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Bashir Nura Alkali, said the items delivered to the state government included 75,600 clothing materials for women, 72,000 for men, 19,200 pieces of blankets and 17,200 pieces of polytene mats for onward distribution to the IDPs resettled to their homes .
She added that the items were Federal Government support to the resettlement of the displaced persons as approved by the president.
