The Brazilian government has officially announced Nigeria’s inclusion as a partner country in the multinational bloc, BRICS.

This development was disclosed in a statement by Brazil’s Foreign Ministry on Friday.

According to the statement, Nigeria and BRICS share aligned interests, particularly in strengthening cooperation among Global South nations and advocating for the reform of international organizations.

“With the world’s sixth-largest population—and Africa’s largest—as well as being one of the continent’s major economies, Nigeria shares convergent interests with other members of BRICS. It plays an active role in strengthening South-South cooperation and in reforming global governance—issues that are top priorities during Brazil’s current presidency,” the statement said.

Brazil assumed the BRICS presidency for 2025 on January 1, succeeding Russia.

Nigeria has become the 9th partner country of BRICS, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan in the category established during the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan in October 2024.
