BREAKING: WHO declares Nigeria Ebola free hours after evacuation of index patient

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that Nigeria currently has no reported Ebola cases following the evacuation of the index patient to Switzerland.

The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, disclosed this in a statement shared on his verified X account on Monday.

According to Janabi, Nigeria will continue to monitor 52 contacts, while health authorities in Switzerland will take responsibility for the patient’s care and monitor her husband.

He added that the patient was in a clinically stable condition after Nigerian medical teams successfully treated her during the acute phase of the illness and stabilised her health.

“Nigeria is now Ebola-free following the evacuation of the index patient to Switzerland.

“Nigeria would maintain close follow-up of 52 contacts, while Switzerland would assume responsibility for the continued management of the patient and monitoring of contact number 53, her husband,” Janabi said.

Recall that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, had earlier confirmed one imported case from Uganda and placed 53 contacts under monitoring in Abuja.
