Buhari commissions N19.6bn Customs Headquarters in Abuja

President Muhammadu Buhari has commissioned the newly constructed Nigeria Customs Service Corporate Headquarters in Abuja.

This commissioning comes after the President on Monday officially opened the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, which was founded by Aliko Dangote, the president of the Dangote Group.

At a news conference in Abuja on Monday, the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, revealed that the new sophisticated Corporate Headquarters cost the NCS N19.6 billion.

According to Adeniyi, the chairman of the organising committee for the edifice’s commissioning, the structure has a 12-floor tower with five stories on each of its two wings and “bridges” connecting the two wings.

According to the chairman, work on the facility started in 2007 as a result of the necessity to establish a suitable building for the service.

He added that the building’s construction was also influenced by the necessity for extra room given the service’s capacity.

After rebuilding and upgrading, the building, according to Adeniyi, was prepared for commissioning.

The building, which occupies a space of about 25,000 square metres, was created by domestic companies, according to the chairman.

He stated that the structure’s height above the ground was roughly 40 metres, making it one of Maitama’s Business District’s tallest structures.

Adeniyi stated that the structure would be maintained with new and up to date mechanical and electrical services installations.

The deputy comptroller-general of customs said the service was proud to state that “such an architectural masterpiece is cost efficient.”

On the challenges encountered during the construction of the building, Adeniyi said there were challenges ranging from variations and adjustments in the model of the building.

The Corporate Headquarters building referred to as “Customs House”, is located in Maitama, one of the high-brow areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The project was conceived in 2002 to provide a comfortable and conducive working environment for staff and authorised visitors to the building.
