Buhari’s name featured in Thursday’s report highlighting the decision by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, to revoke land titles belonging to several prominent individuals.
Responding to the report in a statement on Thursday, Garba Shehu clarified that the land in question was allocated to the “Muhammadu Buhari Foundation.”
He explained, “The Foundation was established by some well-meaning individuals around the former President, who operated lawfully with support from other like-minded persons.
“However, they encountered difficulties with the land department of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), which imposed an exorbitant fee for issuing the certificate of occupancy. The cost was disproportionately high compared to similar organisations. Whether this was an error or a deliberate act, the revocation of the land does not come as a surprise.”
Shehu further noted that former President Buhari personally owns a plot of land in Abuja, adding, “During his time in office, when he and his cabinet were invited to apply for land allocations, he returned the form unfilled, stating he already had a plot in the FCT. He requested that those without land be prioritised instead.”
He urged critics to “get their facts right” and avoid tarnishing the former President’s name. “Those spreading misinformation about the so-called seizure of Buhari’s land should stop dragging his name through the mud,” Shehu concluded.
