The Lagos State Government has warned again that anyone who builds a building without approval could be prosecuted for breaking the law and the building could be demolished.

The caution was delivered by Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, as part of a regular inspection of the constructed surroundings in the Lekki/Ajah corridor on Wednesday.

During this inspection, Olumide gave instructions for the closure and partial dismantling of structures that were in violation of regulations at various points in the area. He also issued a stern ultimatum, mandating owners and developers of all buildings situated under the power lines to evacuate within a two-week period.

He emphasized that no construction is allowed beneath the powerline, as it should solely serve for the open presentation of goods and services.

Expressing his disapproval of the widespread negligence of physical planning regulations throughout the state, he stressed that everyone, regardless of their status, will be held accountable under the law in the pursuit of a habitable and enduring urban environment.

He encouraged property owners and developers to secure planning permits prior to commencing construction and adhere to the conditions specified in those approvals to avoid legal repercussions.

The commissioner additionally reviewed the removal of structures along drainage paths within Ikota Villa Estate, conducted by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources. He emphasized the significance of acquiring official consent prior to constructing buildings and ensuring that the construction aligns with the authorized plan. This, he stressed, is of utmost importance, as planning permits play a critical role in upholding environmental sustainability and national security.
