CAF bans Guinea-Bissau stadium over waterlogged pitch

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has banned the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau from hosting further matches following concerns over the extremely poor and waterlogged condition of its pitch.

The decision came after strong criticism and complaints from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Super Eagles players over the uneven and substandard playing surface during Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Guinea-Bissau.

CAF also issued an official apology to Nigeria, stating that the condition of the pitch had deteriorated significantly and was no longer at the standard observed when it was initially inspected and approved.

Guinea-Bissau must now secure an alternative CAF-approved venue outside the country for its remaining home qualifying fixtures, having previously used Morocco as an alternative home ground.
