China taises tariffs on US goods to 84% as rift escalates

China has once again retaliated against U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies by increasing its tariffs on American imports to over 80%.

According to a translation of the announcement, China’s Office of the Tariff Commission of the State Council stated that tariffs on U.S. goods will rise to 84% from the previous 34%, effective April 10. This decision follows the recent U.S. tariff increase that raised levies on Chinese goods to over 100%, which took effect on April 9.

The ongoing escalation of tariffs poses a significant risk of halting trade between two of the world’s largest economies.

Last week, the Trump administration unveiled a comprehensive new tariff policy and cautioned other nations against retaliation. While some countries, like Japan, have shown a willingness to negotiate tariffs, China seems to be adopting a more resolute position.

Following China’s initial response to the tariffs announced on April 2, Trump declared an additional 50% increase, raising the total tariff on Chinese goods to 104%.

Prior to the full implementation of its trade policy in April, the U.S. had already imposed new tariffs on China, as well as on Canada and Mexico, as part of an administration effort to curb the influx of fentanyl into the United States.
