For the first time since 2011, the Osun State Government’s free rail service was not offered to tourists coming to the state from Lagos and Ogun to celebrate Christmas and the New Year.
The program was started by the previous administration of Rauf Aregbesola, the state’s Governor, and it continued under his leadership.
When Adegboyega Oyetola took over as Governor in 2018, he continued the custom as well.
When Senator Ademola Adeleke was sworn in as the new governor on November 25, the Oyetola administration began making plans for the free train service.
However, it was not immediately clear why the Adeleke administration ended the free rail service, which is claimed to have been started by a previous commissioner for commerce and industry named Dr. Bode Olaonipekun.
According to reports, Olawale Rasheed, the Governor’s press secretary, offered to inquire with the appropriate government officials about the initiative’s status when contacted on Friday.
He did not answer subsequent calls to his cell phone number, and as of the time this story was submitted on Saturday, he had not responded to a text given to him.
