The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, urges judges to uphold the judiciary’s integrity and ensure fairness and steadfastness in their judgments.’
The Chief Justice of Nigeria addressed the audience during the inauguration of the special session marking the commencement of the 2023/2024 Legal year and the swearing-in ceremony for 58 recently appointed Senior Advocates of Nigeria in Abuja.
Ariwoola emphasized his anticipation for every judicial officer to diligently work, demonstrating honesty and courtesy towards litigants, witnesses, and members of the bar. He urged them to discharge their judicial responsibilities with utmost humility.
In his commitment to upholding the rule of law, the comprehensive independence of the judiciary, and maintaining the trust and confidence of the public, the CJN reiterated the Judiciary’s determination not to be swayed by public sentiments in their decisions.
He emphasized that the law holds its ground, regardless of whose interest is at stake.
He urged them to approach their responsibilities as interpreters of the law with a commitment to separating emotions from logic and distinguishing assumptions from facts.
The CJN also reminded the judges that they must always bear in mind that public opinions, sentiments, or emotions can never substitute for the law when deciding cases.
He emphasized that the Judiciary, in its current state, is more deserving of public trust and confidence than ever before. The judges are determined to reposition it for effective justice delivery, making the country a noteworthy destination for upholding the rule of law and constitutional principles.
