The National Broadcasting Commission has been questioned by the Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria on how it came to the conclusion to sanction Channels Television N5 million.
IBAN, in a statement co-signed by its chairman, Guy Murray-Bruce, and the General Secretary, Charles Maraizu Daniels, said it was seeking clarification because “there appears to be no clear procedure on a course of action when broadcasters are notified that they have breached any broadcast code or regulation in line with public service.”
“We, the Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria, wish to request clarification on how the National Broadcasting Commission concluded applying the recent sanction of N5 million fine on Channels Television.
“We seek this clarification because there seems to be no clear procedure on reprimand or course of action when broadcasters are notified that they have breached broadcast codes or regulations in line with public service.
“It is our desire that sanction procedures are open, transparent, and fair.
“We at IBAN take our responsibility as broadcasters seriously because we understand the enormity of the public service we undertake, provide and invest in.”
The group also requested a meeting with NBC, citing the benefits to both parties’ understanding and interest in the sector of a corporate and professional engagement with NBC.
You may recall that the NBC fined Channels Television N5 million for remarks made by Datti-Baba Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice presidential candidate, during an appearance on one of the station’s programmes.
