COEASU seeks take-off and appointment of VC for Ondo varsity

The Adeyemi College of Education branch of the College of Education Academic Staff Union in Ondo State has requested that the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, order the take-off of the institution university status with immediate effect.

The other unions on the institution’s campus had earlier protested on Tuesday against the Federal Government allegedly refusing to permit the institution to operate as a full-fledged university after it had been promoted to varsity status.

They also criticized the lack of a vice chancellor position.

The COEASU encouraged the minister to go forward with the nomination of the institution’s vice chancellor in a letter to the minister of education, a copy of which was provided to our correspondent on Tuesday night.

The union’s Chairman and Secretary, Comrades Dr. Adetokunboh Adepoju and Dr. Joel Edafe, respectively, jointly signed the letter, which was dated June 22, 2022.

The teachers, who bemoaned the college’s delayed launch, encouraged the minister to reject any contentious recommendations for extending or renewing the terms of its top administrators.

Parts of the statement read, “This delay has become a subject of palpable apprehension among staff members, students and members of the host community.

“Some measure of tension is also brewing as a result of the delay. The Union vehemently resist the continuation of the institution as a college of education.

“In view of the foregoing, the Union hereby pleads with the Honourable Minister to consider and attend to the following: Immediate constitution and mobilisation of the Transition Implementation Committee for Adeyemi Federal University of Education; facilitation of enabling conditions for the immediate take-off of the Adeyemi Federal University of Education.

“We urge you, sir, to reject any controversial recommendation for the extension or renewal of the tenure of Principal Officers for the College.

“We pray for the immediate appointment of a Vice-Chancellor that has the requisite qualifications, acumen and attitude to drive a university of education; and assisting in any other way that will enhance and promote the laudable vision of Adeyemi Federal University of Education.
