Proceedings in the case involving Emeka Nwankpa were stalled on Monday after lawyers representing the Anambra State Government failed to appear in court.
At the resumed hearing, Bishop Nwankpa was represented by a high-powered legal team comprising three Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) and seven other lawyers. The cleric is facing allegations by the Anambra State Government that he is a fake pastor.
However, neither the state Attorney General nor any legal representative of the government was present in court to pursue the case.
As a result of the absence of the state’s legal team, the presiding judge adjourned the matter until June 19, 2026, for further hearing.
Hundreds of worshippers, supporters and associates of the cleric gathered at the court premises to show solidarity, expressing optimism that he would be cleared of the allegations.
The Anambra State Government had earlier arrested and detained Bishop Nwankpa over claims that he was operating as a fake pastor.
Supporters of the cleric have alleged that the government’s action may be linked to his purported support for Nicholas Ukachukwu, an opponent of the state governor during the last governorship election, although this claim remains unproven.
Bishop Nwankpa, who remains in detention, appeared in court as part of proceedings related to his bail application.
He is the General Overseer and Senior Pastor of Chapel of Faith Bible Assembly, located at 3-3 Junction in Onitsha.
