Court overturns impeachment of Ogun former deputy speaker

The impeachment and suspension of Dare Kadiri, a former deputy speaker of the state House of Assembly, were overturned on Friday by the Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta, just six months after he had been dismissed.

Solomon Oshowere, who also represents the Remo North State Constituency, and Kadiri, who represents the Ijebu-North II State Constituency, were both suspended due to claims of violating the rights and privileges of the state assembly.

In a ruling on a case that had been brought before the court, Justice O. A. Onafowokan of the High Court 3, Abeokuta judicial division stated that the legislator’s suspension was a “abuse of power and abuse of office by the Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, the House of Assembly, and the Clerk of the House.”

The state House of Assembly was further directed by the court to pay the former constable speaker all emoluments immediately.

According to reports, the speaker said at a plenary that the lawmakers had been suspended in accordance with Sections 14 and 15 of the 2017 Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act.

Osho was later pardoned and called back by the House, but Kadiri went to court to appeal his suspension.

On Friday, Kadiri stormed into the State Assembly Complex shortly after the court’s ruling, causing a small amount of drama.

According to reports, Deji Adeyemo, the Clerk of the House, accused Kadiri of barging into the office with a few of his supporters.

But, a few security guards led him out of the building.
