Court rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s request to be transferred from Sokoto prison

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a request by IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu asking to be moved from the Sokoto Correctional Centre to a detention facility either in the Federal Capital Territory or nearby Nasarawa State.

Acting through the Legal Aid Council, Kanu had filed an ex-parte motion seeking an order compelling the Federal Government or the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to relocate him from Sokoto to the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja or the Keffi facility in Nasarawa.

Alternatively, he sought a transfer to any custodial centre within the court’s jurisdiction—such as Suleja or Keffi—to enable him to properly pursue his appeal.

However, Justice James Omotosho on Monday declined the request, ruling that such an order could not be granted without hearing from the Federal Government.

The judge directed Kanu to convert the ex-parte application into a motion on notice and serve all parties to allow fair hearing.

Justice Omotosho subsequently fixed January 27, 2026, for the hearing of the motion.
