Court restricts hunger protests to four locations in Ogun

The Ogun State High Court on Wednesday ordered the sponsors of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests to limit their activities to four locations in the state.

The court also set the protest hours from 8 am to 5 pm.

Following an application by the State’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), Justice Olugboyega Ogunfowora ruled that all protests under the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria banner, or any similar slogans, from August 1, 2024, to August 10, 2024, must adhere to these location and time restrictions.

Protests are restricted to the following sites: MKO Stadium in Abeokuta, Ansar-ud-Deen Comprehensive High School in Ota, Remo Divisional High School in Sagamu, and Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode.

The Attorney-General noted that these locations cover all four divisions of the state and the three senatorial districts, enabling protesters to participate with adequate security while respecting the rights of non-protesters.

The judge also mandated that no protests occur outside the designated hours of 8 am to 5 pm.

Furthermore, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State has been instructed to enforce the order, ensuring protests are confined to the specified locations and times.

The order is set to be in effect for seven days, with the state required to serve notice of the application within this timeframe. Justice Ogunfowora also shortened the protesters’ response time to 72 hours.

The case is scheduled for adjournment on August 6, 2024.
